A recent discovery in the latest One UI 8 build has provided a glimpse of Samsung’s highly anticipated tri-fold phone. This innovative device is reported to feature two inward-folding hinges, commonly known as a G-shaped fold, which differs from the S-shaped fold seen in models like the HUAWEI Mate XT. Speculation suggests that this new foldable will be named the Samsung Galaxy G Fold and could be unveiled at the upcoming Samsung Unpacked event next week.

Samsung is expected to roll out its next generation of Galaxy foldables during this launch, including the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and Galaxy Z Flip FE. However, the spotlight may also shine on the Galaxy G Fold, as indicated by the new animations in One UI 8 that hint at its design.

The animations, which primarily showcase the NFC positioning, also reveal intriguing insights about the device. It appears that the Samsung tri-fold flagship is designed with three rear panels. The left panel is expected to accommodate a triple camera setup, resembling current Galaxy Z Fold models, while the middle panel is likely dedicated to the cover display, complete with a front-facing camera. The right panel appears to lack bezels, indicating that it may simply be a blank panel rather than a display.

Additionally, the Galaxy G Fold’s design differentiates itself from the HUAWEI Mate XT by featuring two inward-folding hinges. This design, similar to Samsung Display’s Flex G prototypes, allows for a unique folding mechanism compared to HUAWEI’s mix of inward and outward folding.

The animations also depict the differing sizes of the hinges, likely intended to ensure a flat fold without putting too much stress on the display. A warning animation suggests that users should avoid folding the panel containing the rear cameras first to prevent potential damage, underlining the careful engineering behind the device.

Notably, the side frame of the Galaxy G Fold is shown to be recessed in the middle, presumably to house the volume rocker and side button. Interestingly, the animations refer to the device as “Multifold 7,” which may simply be a placeholder rather than its final name.

While the current terminology of “tri-fold” is widely used throughout the industry, it is technically inaccurate since the device has two displays and folding hinges. A more appropriate term might be “multi-fold,” and consumers are hopeful that Samsung will adopt this label moving forward.

As it stands, Samsung has yet to officially confirm any plans for this tri-fold foldable. The animation files should be viewed with some skepticism as they may represent early concepts that could change by the time of the launch. There is also the possibility that the G Fold might not debut at the upcoming event. Further updates will be provided as new information emerges.
