Jack Dorsey, CEO of Block and co-founder of Twitter, has introduced bitchat, an experimental peer-to-peer messaging application that functions without the need for an internet connection or an account. This innovative approach is rooted in the concept of utilizing protocols rather than proprietary platforms.
Dorsey’s interest in open protocols was significantly influenced by Mike Masnick’s 2019 paper, “Protocols, Not Platforms: A Technological Approach to Free Speech.” This work inspired Dorsey to initiate the Bluesky project while still at Twitter, a venture that has since transitioned into an independent entity. He remains a vocal advocate for systems that prioritize user control over speech and privacy.
After stepping down as Twitter’s CEO prior to its acquisition by Elon Musk, Dorsey also served on the Bluesky board but has since departed from that role. Additionally, he founded Damus, a distinct decentralized social platform. His dedication to this protocol-driven philosophy is evident in the recent unveiling of bitchat.
In a weekend Twitter update, Dorsey described bitchat as a project aimed at exploring Bluetooth mesh networks, relays, and encryption models. He publicly shared the app’s TestFlight link, which quickly filled all 10,000 available beta slots. The app promises an intriguing concept: a peer-to-peer messaging system that operates solely over Bluetooth mesh networks—eliminating the need for phone numbers, emails, Wi-Fi, or cellular service.
Alongside the TestFlight, he provided a link to the project’s GitHub repository and an initial whitepaper that outlines the service. The documentation characterizes bitchat as:
“(…) a decentralized, peer-to-peer messaging application that operates over Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks. It provides ephemeral, encrypted communication without relying on internet infrastructure, making it resilient to network outages and censorship.”
While the future of bitchat remains uncertain—whether it will evolve into a mainstream application or remain a niche project for tech enthusiasts—Dorsey’s commitment to fostering innovation through open protocols is clearly evident as he continues to pursue solutions that rival the impact of Twitter.
