The team behind the latest “Superman” film is addressing criticism aimed at director James Gunn, who referred to the iconic character as “an immigrant that came from other places.”

In response to the backlash, Gunn emphasized that the movie is intended for “everyone” and expressed his desire to rise above negativity surrounding the film. “I’m not here to judge people,” he stated during the film’s premiere at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. “I think this is a movie about kindness and I think that’s something everyone can relate to.”

Actor Nathan Fillion, cast as Guy Gardner, also reacted to the controversy with humor, saying, “Aw, somebody needs a hug. Just a movie, guys.”

Sean Gunn, who portrays Maxwell Lord, echoed his brother’s sentiments and defended the idea that immigrants are a vital part of American society. “My reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about,” he remarked. “We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants, and if you don’t like that, you’re not American. People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.”

The controversy sparked after James Gunn’s profile in The Times of London, where he outlined themes of the film. He described “Superman” as a narrative reflecting the essence of America, portraying a man seeking a new life far from his homeland. “I mean, ‘Superman’ is the story of America,” Gunn said. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

Gunn’s comments ignited significant backlash, particularly among conservative commentators and media, with outlets like Fox News labeling the film “Superwoke.” Fox anchor Kellyanne Conway criticized the film, stating, “We don’t go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology onto us.” Jesse Watters added, “You know what it says on his cape? MS13.”
